About Us

Yang Hao

Choreographer and dancer born in Chongqing China based in Hong Kong. After cseveral staged solos, Yang Hao currently researches on a new form of performance intertwining contemporary dance and stand-up comedy. It is a research on the long-term, rooted in his personality. He has started to show his dance-comedy research since March 2018. Currently he is artist in residence in Hong Kong University working on a drama piece.

Chronology:

1986:

  • Born in Chongqing China

1998:

  • Yang Hao joins the Song and Dance Arts School in Beijing, China

2002:

  • He joins the Guangzhou Song and Dance Troupe, a traditional Chinese dance company. First tour in Europe with the company

2005: 

  • Yang Hao joins the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, in Guangzhou, China, at a short distance from the border with Hong Kong. Tours with the company in the US, Canada, Netherlands, Poland, Denmark and Hong Kong

2007:

  • Yang Hao gets the attention of Jaime Redfern, head of contemporary dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He receives full scholarship from the Academy for Performing Arts to study a master degree in choreography in Hong Kong

2009:

  • He decides to leave the academy before graduation of master degree to accept a position as dancer at the City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong

2010:

  • First creation as choreographer “Autorun” for City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong

2013:

  • Yang Hao receives funding from Culture Partnership Initiative Korea to join SIDance festival Dance Exchange 2013 as resident artist

  • Creation of “Cube” for 4 dancers

  • Yang Hao is invited by Singapore contact festival and Malaysia d’motion international dance festival to perform a preview of his first solo “Outspoken” (2014)

2014:

  • First collaboration with Alice Rensy for a performance at Leslie Meganck-Van Eyck’s space (place today known as “Wing”)

  • Recreation of “Outspoken” in collaboration with Alice Rensy for the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series

  • Creation of “Nothing… but something” with 5 dancers including him in Hong Kong Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre Theatre in collaboration with Alice Rensy

  • An extract of “Nothing… But Something” is presented in Angers CNDC France at the World Dance Alliance Global Summit

  • Yang has is selected by Impulstanz Vienna to take part to their scholarship program Danceweb in July and August

2015:

  • Selection of “Outspoken” as finalist at the Yokohama Dance Collection. Receives no price

  • Creation of “A work with Hong Kong Ballet” for 5 dancers from Hong Kong Ballet (Jessica Burrows, Liu Miao-miao, Arianne Lafita Gonzalvez, Shunsuke Arimizu, Wu Di) as part of the choreographer workshop program of Hong Kong Ballet

2016:

  • Yang Hao is resident artist in Yale University in New Haven USA as part of the Yale-China association program

  • Creation of solo “Pied-a-terre” in collaboration with music composer Christopher Ross-Ewart and script-writer Jesssica Rizzo

  • Hong Kong premiere of “Pied-a-Terre” at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Jockey Club Contemporary Dance series

  • First full-night program: Creation of solo “Middle” in collaboration with Alice Rensy and USA premiere of “Pied-a-terre” at the New Haven Festival for Arts & Ideas

  • Selected with other Hong Kong artists to represent Hong Kong at Dusseldorf Tanzmess

  • Presentation of “Outspoken” in a new version with soprano singer Kerstin Pohle in Dusseldorf

  • Residency in Les Halles Brussels in collaboration with Lola Moetti. Creation of duet “Pas de Deux” in Les Halles.

2017:

  • Works in site-specific durational piece “Serious immobilities” by composer Ari Benjamin-Meyers in Spring workshop Hong Kong

  • Hong Kong premiere of “Pas de Deux” in collaboration and with Lola Moetti in Hong Kong Arts Centre

  • Residency in A4 museum Chengdu with Alice Rensy and Nathalie Rothkoff

  • Creation of “Variations between light and people” at A4 museum with Alice Rensy, Nathalie Rothkoff and 3 dancers from Chengdu with the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council

  • Invited to audition for Pina Bausch’s company in Wuppertal, and in Montpellier for exerce program run by Christian Rizzo. At both he does not pass the final stage of selection.

  • Selected as part of Hong Kong Arts Development Council program New Arts Power

  • Re-development of “Outspoken” with children and teenagers in collaboration with association HOPE Hong Kong, presented in Lee Shau Kee School of creativity as part of New Arts Power

  • Works for Sandy Lam concerts tour “Pranava” in China and Hong Kong

  • Pied-a-terre” presented at Guangdong Modern Dance Festival with the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council

2018

  • Joins workshop lead by Xavier Le Roy and Scarlet Yu organized by West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong

  • Creation of “Fly me to the moon” produced by the Hong Kong Arts Festival Jockey Club contemporary dance series in collaboration with 2 choreographers from China and Hong Kong put together by the festival. At the end of the last show, the festival manager informs Yang Hao that they will never invite him again in the series

  • Premiere of dance-comedy solo titled “The Legend of brother Hao” in English in black box of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, with the support of HKAPA and Eaton hotel

  • Three performances of dance-comedy solo titled “The legend of Haohao” in English and Cantonese in Eaton hotel screening room

  • Teaching intensive choreography workshop to dance students in Guangzhou and Nanjing in collaboration with Alice Rensy

  • Joins Dusseldorf Tanzmess with the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council

  • Resident artist at Hong Kong University mentored by Professor Page Richards in collaboration with Alice Rensy

2019

  • Performance of the dance comedy produced by Orlean Lai in Tai Kwun Hong Kong in Cantonese and Mandarin as part of the New Arts Power program of Hong Kong Arts Development Council

2020

  • Residence at Hong Kong Arts Center for two years

  • Performs for Eisa Jocson in her durational work “Zoo” in the show “My Body Holds its Shape” in Tai Kwun JC Contemporary between May and September

  • Starts Master degree in creative media City University of Hong Kong
